Before we cover how to use Pinterest for marketing , let’s first address why use Pinterest for marketing in the first place.

Why use Pinterest for Marketing?
With more than 200 million active users a month worldwide and over 100 billion ideas to search, this platform powerhouse is impossible to ignore.
You see, Pinterest isn’t a social media platform per say.
Instead, Pinterest works like search engine whose search results are presented as “pins” or images, which then lead to its original destination (a website, blog, store, etc.).
That’s where you come in.
As a blogger/business owner, your pins will surface in someone’s search results and lead them straight to your pins destination (your blog, business, affiliate link, store, etc.).
For instance, say you are looking for a sugar-free cookie recipe.
You type sugar-free cookie recipe in the search field and BOOM!
Hundreds and thousands of pins surface despite the date they were created, and that, my friends, in the power of Pinterest.
In other social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, posts get lost in the daily feeds in just seconds of posting.
In Pinterest, however, pins can resurface at any given time if they fit someone’s search criteria.
Many successful bloggers I know, including myself, currently receive most of their traffic from Pinterest.
Without paying a penny or fighting for a top ten spot on Google’s first page search results. Granted, that should also be your goal.
For those who are just learning how to use Pinterest it might feel a bit intimidating. And for those who have used it for use might be lacking important Pinterest marketing strategies.
In either instance, I’ve got you covered!
So, grab a pen and paper, and save this article somewhere you can access it often. Because you are going to want to learn and apply everything we will go over today.

Pinterest in General
Pinterest is comprised of pins.
People use Pinterest in different ways.
They search for things they’re interested in, browse their home feeds for new ideas and look at other people’s boards to see what they like.
When they find something that catches their eye, they either save the Pin to their own boards or click on the Pin’s URL to learn more, shop or buy.
Pinterest for Marketing
Pins are images that are created by account users which lead to a destination (website, blog, store, etc.).
Pins “live” on your Pinterest “smart feed”, the “trending feed”, on your boards, and other user’s boards.
Your smart feed is where pins regenerate on an ongoing basis based on Pinterest internal “thinking process” called algorithm.
The Pinterest algorithm creates your smart feed by regenerating, ranking, and prioritizing pins based on their quality and your Pinterest interaction.
The smart feed ensures that the pins that are continually showing up on your feed are relevant to your interests.
They do so by analyzing your Pinterest behavior such as your recent searches, people you follow, your preset interests, recently saved pins, and so on.
Pinterest smart feed algorithm will analyze the pins you like, pin, and re-pin, and will in turn show you those kinds of pins on your feed.
You will then pin those pins along with your own into personal boards and group boards.
Boards simply allow you to organize your pins into groups of relevant content. More on boards later.
You have the option to following others, and other can follow you.
Your pins will be shared with your followers, and those whose results match your pins description.
The ultimate goal is that your pins reach a much larger audience by the repining process and by being discoverable on other user’s search results.

How to use Pinterest for Marketing
1. How to Create a Free Business Account
Every user has an account (personal or business).
If you have a personal account you have the option of turning it into a business account.
However, it is recommended you start a brand new business account with a clean foundation to build on.
A Pinterest business account will give you distinctive advantages over a personal account such as:
- Rich pins
- Access to promoted pins/ads

To create your free Pinterest business account:
- If you have a personal profile, log out of it
- Go to the Pinterest for Business site and click sign up
- Fill out all the details about your business
- Read and accept Pinterest’s Business Terms of Service and click Create Account
2. How to Optimize your Pinterest Business Profile
Congrats! You are on your way to making Pinterest change the way you blog and do business.
But, before we move along and add boards and pins to your account, let’s optimize your Pinterest profile.
To optimize your Pinterest Profile:
- Include keywords in your profile’s business name and about sections (more on keywords next)
- Upload a good quality photo of yourself or business logo. Keep in mind that a photo of yourself tends to do better that other images
- Claim/confirm your website with Pinterest
- Enable Rich Pins
Note: You can perform task 1, 2, and 3 by:
- Click the three dots icon at the top right hand of your screen
- Click on Settings
- Click on Profile (to edit business name and about section)
- Click on Confirm Website and follow instructions
Pinterest Rich Pins are a must for making the best out of your Pinterest experience and optimizing your Pinterest marketing strategy.
As Pinterest explains, “Pinterest Rich Pins allow for more context about an idea because they show extra information directly on a Pin.”
Rich Pins also give your pins a more official and professional look, among its other great features.
The featured information in your pins will appear in bold making it stand out from the rest of the other pins without it. The features of the rich pins depend on the type of rich pin.
There are four types of rich pins:
- Article Pins shows a headline, author, and story description.
- Recipe Pins are able to display ingredients, cooking times, and serving sizes.
- Product Pins make shopping easier by including real-time pricing, availability, and where to buy your product.
- App Pins show an install button so people can download your app without leaving Pinterest (only compatible with IOS at the moment).
For most bloggers, the Article Pins are the most useful.
For business owners, depending on their business structure, Product Pins might be the best option.

3. All about Pinterest SEO, Pinterest Keywords, and Pinterest Hashtags
As we mentioned earlier, Pinterest is a search engine.
It is for that reason that learning Pinterest SEO (Search Engine Optimization) it is crucial in order to achieve Pinterest success.
Before we can create Pinterest Pins and Boards, we have to understand Pinterest keywords and SEO.
Keywords are words that you should be using in relation to your niche or product.
Keywords should also be specific to the group board and pin topic that you are trying for Pinterest users to “discover”.
Just like Google, when you search a query on Pinterest, it will show you suggestions. Suggestions are based on what other people also searched in relation to your query.
Let’s say you want to create a pin for a new blog post titled, “Why Paleo Eating is Beneficial to your Health.”
Take a look at your root word or phrase “paleo eating” and do a general Pinterest search to see what other related keywords appear.
Notice that as you type your word or phrase on the search bar, Pinterest immediately populates suggested words or phrases.
These suggestions are great to include in your pins description or to keep in mind for future posts.
Once you are finished typing your full word or phrase, click enter.
Notice all the color words that appear underneath the search bar.
That means that there is a high volume of people searching for those particular terms.
Consider including those keywords in your pin description if they apply. If you are a blogger, these keywords are great SEO-friendly blog post ideas.
That would ensure that your pin has the highest chance of surfacing on search results for that particular query.
Hashtags have recently gained popularity on Pinterest.
Hashtags were a questionable topic on Pinterest for a while. But after the latest Pinterest update, Pinterest representatives confirmed the need and importance of hashtags in Pinterest Pins.
You can make a hashtag by simply putting the number sign (#) in front of any word(s) without any spaces in between. For instance #paleo or #paleoeating.
Hashtags have the power to interconnect all pins that have a particular hashtag in its description.
In the example below, notice how when you type #paleo in the search bar, it populates pins with #paleo in the description.
In other words, it is an easy way to filter content and reach a specific audience.
Hashtags should be general terms, short, and not too specific.
Sticking to our last scenario, good examples of hashtags include #paleo, #health, #healthyeating,
Hashtags that wouldn’t be as successful include #dopaleoandlivewell, #whyIdopaleo #livehealthierwithpaleo.
Using 3-5 hashtags per pin should be sufficient.
Boards description have not yet proven to benefit from hashtags. So as of this writing, I discourage you to do so.
I cannot stress enough the importance of keywords and Pinterest SEO when it comes to Pinterest for marketing!
4. All about personal Pinterest boards
Now that you have the basic understanding of Pinterest SEO and keywords it is time to create your personal boards.
There are two types of boards on the Pinterest, personal boards and group boards.
Personal boards are the ones YOU create and only YOU contribute (pin) to.
Group boards are boards created by you or someone else but that other people also contribute to.
In this section we will focus on personal boards. You will learn how to create them and how to optimize them.
Your Pinterest account is comprised of group boards and pins.
Your pins “live” in the group boards where you choose to pin them to.
Your group boards should have titles and descriptions that match your blog/business niche.
By having well key worded boards and pins is how we tell Pinterest who we are and what we are about.
It is important that we have a defined image of what our ideal reader or customer would be looking for. Then, we can use keywords to generate that connection between us and our clients/readers/followers.
That way Pinterest can send traffic our way by pulling up our boards and pins in search queries that match our keywords.
In a perfect Pinterest world your Pinterest account (boards and pins) will focus on just ONE niche.
It easier to tell Pinterest about us if our blog/business focused on one particular topic (e.g. food, finances, health, fitness, mental health, etc.).
That is because the signals that we send Pinterest through our keywords and pinning activity are easier to understand if it’s consistent with just one main topic.
However, that is not always the case.
In fact, many successful blogs and business focus on multiple categories. For instance, a mom blog might focus on maternity, household cleaners, and homeschooling.
In that case it is a great practice to have specified boards for different topics you cover on your blog/business.
Never use tittle boards with random personalized names. It would be extremely hard for your target readers to find your board if you name it “my favorite yummy healthy foods”.
They should be titled with optimized keywords in relevance to the content of the pins within that particular board.
If I were to have a Paleo Lifestyle Blog my board titles would look something like this:
- Paleo breakfast recipes
- Paleo lunch recipes
- Paleo dinner
- Paleo snack recipes
- Paleo ingredients
- Paleo Books
- Best Paleo advice
- Paleo meal planning
- Paleo for Beginners
- Paleo Tips
- Paleo Knowledge
…and so on. You get the idea.
Never leave a board without a description.
The more descriptive your boards are, the better the chances people will find you and your boards through Pinterest search results.
Do a general search on Pinterest of that board’s topic and take a look at Pinterest suggestions and keywords. Then, include them in your board’s description.
How to create a Pinterest Board
Now that you know how to tittle your boards and write well key worded descriptions, let’s go over the technicalities of creating a board on your Pinterest account.
To do so:
- Click on your profile name
- Click on boards
- Click on the plus sign
- Add a tittle and description following the guidelines we discussed above.
Boards also give you the ability to add sections, if you want to organize your content even further.
Awesome! You created your first board. Let’s add pins to it.
5. All about Pins
One of the most important parts of learning how to use Pinterest for marketing is learning about Pins. How to create them, how to optimize them with keywords, and how to pin them.
Pinterest Pins are the backbone of Pinterest.
A pin is created by a given person using a graphic design tools, such as Canva, PicMonkey, or Photoshop. That Pin is then given a description and a destination to a specific source (blog, store, affiliate product or service, etc.).
For instance, “How to Soothe a Teething Baby” Pin links back to “How to Soothe a Teething Baby” post on MommyHacksBlog.com.
Pinterest Pins are visually appealing and vertical in shape.
Because your pins will live amongst a pool of similar pins and content, it is important you do your best to help your pins standout.
You do that by creating visually appealing pins and with high quality photos on those pins.
I use and love DepositPhotos. This is the paid stock photo membership of my choice. They have beautiful options for bloggers of all niches.
There has been a lot of talk recently about legal issues revolving around the use of free images on your blog. In addition high quality images are imperative for website optimization and Pinterest Pin creation and long term success.
In the world of Pinterest marketing your Pins must follow a certain pattern to give them the best change at thriving.
There are different kinds of pins and not all serve the same purpose (URL, shop, buy).
There are also promoted pins which are ad campaigns you can set up for a paid amount.
Take a close look at the purpose of your pin and design it accordingly.
Consider the following when creating your Pins:
Because most pin destinations for bloggers lead to articles, it is hard sometimes to find and image that conveys the essence of the articles’ content.
It is for that reason that adding words and overlay to you image to better explain what your Pin is about is a great idea.
However, if you are a fashion blogger or a food blogger, an image alone might be sufficient.
If the purpose of your pin is to get people to buy a product directly from the Pinterest platform or shop more from your site, a high quality product image might also be sufficient.
Either way, I suggest you do a Pinterest search on your niche and see what the Pins of the top contenders on your field look like.
Pay close attention to their visual design of their Pins (color, fonts, size) as well as descriptions and hashtags.
- The recommended ratio is 600px x 900px
- Use high quality images or stock images (as I mentioned, DepositPhotos is my top choice for stock photos at a reasonable price. Creative Market also has beautiful images and other graphic design goods you can purchase.
- Use bold fonts and overlay when necessary
- Use Keywords in your tittle and description
- Create multiple pins per blog post/product
- Pay attention to what pin design and aesthetic resonates better with your audience and recreate more of those pins.
To create beautiful and easy pins I recommend creating a free account with Canva.
Canva is a fantastic graphic design website which provides you with templates for any platform you wish to create an image for (Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram… and much more!).

6. All about pinning
Now that you have created your boards and Pins is time to bring them together.
Remember, using Pinterest for personal use isn’t the same as using Pinterest for marketing purposes.
Yes! You pin Pins to boards. But from a Pinterest marketing perspective there is strategy and intent behind your pinning.
When you introduce a new Pin to Pinterest, it comes as a clean slate.
Pinterest has not identified or indexed what that pin is about and where to place it.
With time, Pinterest internally assigns your Pin keywords based on the Pin’s tittle, description, image fonts, and the pin’s re-pin activity and board placement.
That’s why it is so important that your pins have accurate keywords and that are pinned to relevant boards.
That leads us into “pinning with purpose”.
Pinning with Purpose
So, if anything you take away from this article today, it is what I will share with you next.
Pay close attention to this whole section. It contains fundamental information as to how to use Pinterest for marketing.
The next few paragraph will show you how Pinterest operates and what you must do to ensure you have the best chance at Pinterest marketing success.
Here is the transition a Pin has on the Pinterest platform from the moment it is introduced until it takes off:
- You introduce a new Pin
- You pin it to your relevant personal boards. Only to the boards where keywords and specifications matches the pins keywords and specification.
- Pin it to relevant group boards that also match those keywords and specifications.
- Pinterest will them show your followers your new Pin.
- Pinterest will show your Pin in the results of search queries that match you Pin’s keywords and specification.
- Depending on the interaction your Pin has with your followers, Pinterest will then showcase your pins to others on “recommended pins” or “pins you might like”.
- Then hopefully, after continuing to receive positive interaction and re-pins through searches and group boards, Pinterest will then showcase your pins in their “trending” section.
- … and by the grace of God your Pin will then go viral!
Ok, step 8 is total speculation. But that would be really nice, wouldn’t it?
On a serious note however, if it does go viral, it most likely went down the funnel we just covered.
Notice the importance of pinning your pins to relevant boards.
Please also note that it takes time and patience.
Some pins take off in three days and some take off in a year. It is really hard to predict how Pinterest and its ever-changing algorithm will treat your Pins.
And ultimately Pinterest has the final say of what it chooses to do despite our efforts.
What we can do it increase the odds at Pinterest success is the following…
- Use keywords in titles and description of Pins and boards
- Pin constantly (daily, ideally)
- Pin at least 10-20 pins a day, to start
- It is a good practice to also pin other’s content into your own relevant boards, especially if you don’t have many pins of your own.
- Pin at your optimal times (Tailwind will automatically formulate these time slots for you)
- Use a pins scheduler to save you time (Tailwind- more on Tailwind next)
- Create and upload new Pins for old posts or products (Pinterest loves and favors new Pins/content)
- Fill your boards with relevant content from your own Pins, other pinners Pins, trending Pins, and from the smart feed
If you do what I just mentioned, the odds will be in your favor.
What if I don’t have my own Pins to pin yet?
No problem at all.
Using the keyword technique we spoke about earlier, create specific boards for your niche and the topics you will be writing about.
While you create your own Pins you can pin others content to your own relevant boards.
That is a great way to help “prep” your new boards by telling Pinterest what your board is about.
Once you are ready to start pinning your own content, your boards will be internally key-worded by Pinterest and ready for your new relevant Pins.
How to pin
There are different ways to introduce a Pin to your Pinterest account.
- By uploading a Pin you created to Pinterest (e.g. from your computer files)
- By Pinning a Pin directly from your website or someone else’s website
- By pinning it from Pinterest itself (other’s boards, your smart feed, trending, etc.)
- By uploading it to Talwind’s queue
The Pins on the Pinterest platform and in some websites will have a visible Pinterest red “SAVE” button.
When you click on the “SAVE” button, Pinterest will then showcase all of your boards as an option to pin them to.
Once you select the relevant board to pin the pin to, just select it, and done!
Once you get the hang of it, pinning will become second nature.
All you have to do is wash, rinse, and repeat.
7. All about Group Boards
Pinterest group boards are extremely helpful and popular in the blogging world.
They are also very valuable when implementing Pinterest marketing strategies.
Pinterest group boards are created by any given person who chooses to have others collaborate on that particular board with a specific topic (blogging, travel, fashion, cooking, parenting, and so on).
Pinterest group boards give your Pins exposure. And because of their multiple contributors and followers they have the potential to reach thousands of people at any given time.
How to find and join group boards
Here is one of the best ways to find group boards:
- Find someone you follow and admire on Pinterest that is in your niche
- Go to their profile and click on boards
- Scroll down and see if they belong to any group board that catches your eye and that is relevant to your our content/product(s).
Note: You can differentiate personal boards from group boards because group boards display a “multiple contributors” icon on the left bottom corner of the board cover.
- Click on the group board and read the board’s description
- Follow the instructions to join (send an email; send a message through Pinterest, etc.).
- Wait for an invite
- Accept the invite
- Pin to that group board on a daily basis
How to create your own group board
You create a Pinterest group board the same way you were to create a personal board.
To make it a group board however, you must first enable the “multiple contributors” option on the board’s settings.
Make sure you specify on the board’s description what kind of contributors you are looking for and any other specifications you want to address. Remember to also include some keywords while you are at it.
This group board is for all things Paleo Recipes and Paleo eating. To contribute please follow my Pinterest account first and request an invite by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Note: This is a great way to get Pinterest followers in your niche.
You can invite others to join your board by clicking on the plus sign located next to your picture on the board cover.
Pinterest will send them an automated message with your invite. Once they accept your invite they will be able to pin on your board as contributors.
Another way to find Pinterest Group boards in your niche is to join Facebook groups.
8. How to Automate your pins by using Tailwind
Now that we have the whole Pinterest process figured out, it is time to implement time-saving strategies.
Understanding the importance of automating tasks as a blogger and entrepreneur is key. Simply, because it leaves you free time for content and product creation.
That’s where Tailwind comes in- a Pinterest marketing must!
Because Pinterest algorithm reward active pinners by showcasing their pins more often than those who don’t participate as often, it is important to enlist some help in the process.
Pin schedulers are companies that provide you with automated pinning throughout the day for a small fee.
All it requires is a few minutes a week, and you can program Pins to be pinned to your designated boards and group boards for days, even weeks in advance.

Once you have your time slots for each day of the week, you can just attach pins to them so that the pinning process can happen automatically throughout the day or week,
Again, depending on how far ahead you set your schedule.
You can also create Tribes. With this tool, you will be able to add your own content to a Tribe and have others view, schedule and share your content with their audience.

BE CONSISTENT! It is better to pin 5 pins a day, every day, rather than to pin 50 Pins one day of the week.
Try to create new Pins and content weekly.
A good strategy if you don’t have new content often is to simply create new Pins, with new descriptions for older content.
Remember, Pinterest LOVES fresh material!
There is nothing wrong with manual pinning, but if you run a kid crazy circus like I do, and have too many boards to pin to, get Tailwind and make your life easier.
Don’t forget to pin other’s relevant content to your boards. That will help your boards mature and it will help Pinterest sort them out accordingly.
